COMMUNITY NEWS
Our activities range from supporting events to add vibrancy to Port Coogee to addressing long standing issues within the community. Much of our work to resolve problems requires patience, resilience and a dedication to creating vibrant partnerships to achieve our goals. Port Coogee with its vibrant waterfront is a playground for the whole of the City of Cockburn and with its Maritime Trail has a role in tourism for WA and yet, first and foremost, it must be a beautiful, liveable place for residents. Issues such as safety, traffic and parking have a high priority and we are perpetually engaged in these issues. Our programme is significant for a volunteer group and if you can help in any way please put your hand up.
Protecting the Omeo Dive Trail
Recently the Marina Management applied for 3 boat mooring buoys to be placed near the Omeo Dive Trail. Community consultation was lacking and many residents expressed concern that bringing boats in would be detrimental to the passive activities that take place in this precious stretch of water. The matter will now go to Community Consultation.
Pantheon Roundabout
A tragic accident waiting to happen. This is how residents describe this location with our childcare centre opposite. PCCA have been asked to pursue the investigation of a roundabout at this location and we continue to lobby the City for investigation of a mini-roundabout as installed in many other suburbs sooner rather than later.
New Community Centre
All that’s missing is a roof. The City has now appointed architects to work with Frasers on a community centre for Port Coogee. PCCA have had the opportunity to have input into the brief and we look forward to continuing to be involved over the next few years as the project develops.
Name Change for North Coogee
In 2019 over 90% of the residents of North Coogee signed a Petition to change the name of North Coogee to Port Coogee and South Beach. We continue to work with the City and the South Beach Community Group to navigate the complexities of changing a suburb name.
Keep Australia Beautiful
PCCA has signed on to the KAB “Adopt a Spot” to manage the programme here in Port Coogee, engaging with the volunteers and committee, who undertake regular clean-ups.
Summer Traffic Controls
PCCA is calling for the use of VMS electronic signage over summer at the entrance to Pantheon to let people know the limitations of parking in Port Coogee. We are also seeking the installation of “Smiley Face” slow down signs for Orsino and Pantheon.
Pickup One for Port Coogee
Port Coogee has many visitors over summer and PCCA promotes a “Pickup One for Port Coogee" communication strategy to everyone who enters Port Coogee. We want everyone to be conscious of the problems of litter at Port Coogee
Steps to Chelydra Beach
The proposed steps from the carpark onto the beach was a direct request of residents that PCCA was happy to take up. This project requested by PCCA has been delayed but we have assurances it is still on the drawing board.
Exercise Equipment Circuit
Many residents are keen to see some exercise equipment at Port Coogee. PCCA has used its budget pick with the City of Cockburn this year to request exercise equipment based on a circuit from Coromandel Park. More information will follow soon.
Sustainable September
This new initiative by Frasers Property brings together the City of Cockburn and PCCA to support a range of wonderful sustainability initiatives. PCCA will personally work on great events such as book recycling, a bike event. a community garden talk/ tour and a beach discovery/clean up day, along with supporting all of the other activites that form Sustainable September.
Containers 4 Change
By encouraging local residents to recycle in conjunction with the Scouts WA Recycling we support our sustainability goals and raise funds for future good works within the community.
Port Coogee Christmas Festival
Since Frasers introduced the Christmas Festival in 2018 PCCA have been right there in partnership with the City of Cockburn and Frasers. The grants we apply for every year allow us to bring Santa to Port Coogee and a range of other great attractions such as the Facepainting and Ranger Red.
